Image SEO Services That Turn Product Photos Into Clicks

Most catalogs leak image search traffic through filenames like IMG_2043.jpg, empty alt attributes and 3 MB hero shots. We audit the whole library, rewrite how every image is named, described, sized and delivered, then measure what Google Images sends back.

  • File name and alt text rewrite
  • WebP and AVIF conversion
  • Responsive srcset and LCP tuning
  • Image sitemaps and indexation checks
  • Image search reporting

Works on Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, custom headless builds and plain static sites.

Your image library is a ranking surface nobody owns

Product teams ship photos. The CMS compresses nothing. Nobody writes alt text because nobody sees it. Two years later there are 6,000 images, half of them named after camera files, and the site is invisible in Google Images while a distributor with worse products ranks for the exact query.

Image search is not a vanity channel. For parts, materials, packaging, furniture and equipment, buyers search visually before they search by model number. They find a photo, click through to the page, and only then read the spec. If your images cannot be described, they cannot be found.

There is a performance cost too. Uncompressed images are usually the largest element on a product page and the most common cause of a poor Largest Contentful Paint. Fixing the image layer often improves Core Web Vitals without touching a line of application code.

What “image SEO” actually covers

Six things, in this order: how the file is named, how it is described, how it is sized, how it is delivered, how it is discovered, and how the page around it supports the visual query.

Most agencies stop at alt text. Alt text alone will not fix a 4 MB PNG or an image that no sitemap mentions and no internal link reaches.

Where we usually start

With a crawl of every image URL, its current weight, its rendered dimensions, its alt value and its inbound internal links. That single export tells us whether the problem is description, delivery, or discovery — and they need different fixes.

File names and formats: the small decisions that compound

Every row below is a decision you make once per asset and benefit from for years. None of them require a redesign.

ElementWhat we usually findWhat it becomesWhy it matters
File name IMG_2043.JPG hydraulic-hose-coil-3-8-20m.webp Names are a relevance signal and a human label in the image URL
Format PNG photo, 2.8 MB WebP, quality 82, plus AVIF where supported Cuts weight 60–80% at the same visual quality
Dimensions 2400 px served into a 420 px slot srcset at 1x and 2x of the rendered width Fewer bytes, faster LCP, less mobile data
Alt attribute alt="product image" Product, variant, material, distinguishing attribute Describes the asset to search engines and screen readers
Lazy loading Every image lazy loaded, including the hero Hero eager with high priority, below-fold lazy Lazy loading the LCP image delays the largest paint
Discovery No image sitemap, images only in a carousel script Image sitemap plus crawlable markup Images loaded by JavaScript are often never indexed
Page context Gallery with no caption or surrounding copy Caption, short spec block, internal link Text around the image confirms what the image is

Alt text is a description, not a keyword slot

Write what a colleague would need to identify the image without seeing it. For a product shot, that means product type, material or variant, and one distinguishing detail: “Black anodised aluminium corner bracket, 40 mm, four-hole”. Not “buy aluminium bracket best price online”.

Where the keyword belongs

In the product name, the H1, the caption and the file name — each once. The alt attribute can repeat the product noun because that is what the image shows, but stuffing three synonyms into 120 characters reads as noise to a screen reader and adds nothing to relevance.

Decorative images

Backgrounds, dividers and hover states get an empty alt so assistive technology skips them. An empty alt on a decorative element is correct, not lazy. The mistake is leaving alt empty on a product photo because the field was never filled in.

Diagrams and infographics

For a dimension drawing, the alt should carry the numbers a buyer would ask for, and the surrounding text should describe the rest. If the chart encodes twenty data points, the page needs a text summary — an alt string cannot do that job.

Delivery: where speed and visibility meet

WebP is the default. AVIF compresses better but costs encode time and needs a fallback path, so we enable it where the pipeline already supports negotiation. PNG stays for logos, line art and transparency; JPEG stays as the last-resort fallback.

Every raster gets a srcset with width descriptors and a sizes value that matches the real layout. That single change usually removes the largest byte burden on mobile product pages.

Then the trade-off: lazy loading below the fold is good, lazy loading the hero is not. The first product image should load eagerly with a high fetch priority and a preload hint, because it is almost always the element that decides LCP.

Finally, the CDN. On-the-fly resizing is fine if cache headers are correct and the URL stays stable. Signed, expiring image URLs break caching and confuse crawlers, so we avoid them for anything that needs to be indexed.

This is the same on-page discipline we apply to titles, headings and internal anchors in On-Page SEO Services — the image layer is part of the page, not a separate project.

Image search traffic, stage by stage

A typical catalog client after two quarters of image work. The funnel narrows where it should; the loss at the pack stage is what alt text and filename fixes repair.

Product shots and lifestyle shots do different jobs

Product on white

This is the image that should win image search for the model number and the spec query. Clean background, consistent crop, dimensions that match the category template, alt text carrying material and size.

In-context and lifestyle

Installation, warehouse, workshop. This is the image that supports the buying guide and the collection page, and the one that earns links. Alt text describes the application, not the product catalogue code.

Detail and dimension

Close-ups, thread profiles, connector ends, measurement overlays. These answer pre-purchase questions and reduce returns, so they earn their own captions and their own internal links.

On catalogs with thousands of SKUs this tends to overlap with feed and category work. If your product pages also carry Merchant Center feeds or variant URL structures, the image layer should be coordinated with Ecommerce SEO Services rather than fixed in isolation.

How the image sprint runs

Step 01

Inventory and crawl. Every image URL, weight, rendered size, alt value and internal link. This is also where we confirm that Googlebot-Image is not blocked by a hotlink rule or a firewall.

Step 02

Template fixes. One change in the product template, the blog template and the CMS uploader covers thousands of assets at once. We write the rule, your developer ships it.

Step 03

Bulk asset pass. Rename, convert, generate srcset sets, and rewrite alt text for the top pages by traffic and revenue. Long-tail assets follow the same pattern in batches.

Step 04

Discovery and re-measure. Image sitemap, schema where relevant, Search Console image filter, and a 28-day before-and-after on impressions, clicks and LCP.

What changed for three clients

3.6×

A fastener distributor had 4,200 product images named by SKU only. Renaming and alt rewriting lifted image search clicks 3.6 times in five months, and inquiries from organic rose 8 to 26 per month.

Fasteners / 5 months
−71%

A furniture exporter served 2.4 MB hero photos. WebP plus srcset cut page weight by 71% and moved mobile LCP from 4.9 s to 2.1 s, with no design change.

Furniture / 3 months
+1,900

An industrial supplier added an image sitemap and crawlable markup for a JavaScript gallery. Nearly 1,900 images moved from “not indexed” to indexed within a quarter.

Scope-based quote, no price list

Image work is priced by asset volume and template count, not by page count. A 300-product catalog with one template is a small sprint. A marketplace with eight uploaders and no naming convention is a different scope.

We quote after the inventory crawl, and the scope lists exactly which templates, batches and sitemaps are covered. No per-image surprise billing.

For teams that want the whole search surface handled together — images, categories, internal links, feeds and content — the image work rolls into a broader roadmap so fixes ship alongside the pages they support.

What we need from you: CMS access or a developer who can deploy template changes, and a list of the twenty pages that matter most commercially.

Questions we hear before the first crawl

Will renaming thousands of images break old links?

Old image URLs get 301s where external embeds exist. Internal references are updated in the same deploy, and we check the log for 404s on image paths for two weeks after.

Do alt tags really move rankings?

They move image search and accessibility, and they give the page consistent topical signals. They are not a substitute for product copy, but they are the difference between indexed and invisible in image results.

How long before image traffic grows?

Newly described images usually appear in image results within two to eight weeks. Broader gains follow as more assets get indexed and the page speed work takes effect.

Can you work with our existing CDN?

Yes. We test the resizing and caching rules on a staging host before touching production URLs, and we keep one stable URL per asset so caching and indexing stay predictable.

Do we need AVIF?

Only if your pipeline can encode and negotiate it reliably. WebP alone delivers most of the gain; AVIF adds a few percent on large photos at the cost of build time and support complexity.

Who does what, and is it white hat?

We produce the naming rules, alt copy, conversion settings and sitemap updates; your team approves the template change and publishes. Nothing is cloaked, no images are faked for crawlers, and every recommendation is visible on the page a customer sees. Projects run as a fixed sprint or a light monthly retainer.

What do you report on?

Image impressions and clicks in Search Console, indexed image count, page weight, LCP on mobile, and inquiries from pages whose main entry point is an image result.
